Revision I
╔════════════════╗
║ [ Upgrading ] ║
╚════════════════╝
If you are upgrading your existing POWERNODE, there are still
three files to POWERNODE: POWERN.EXE, BBBI.EXE, and BDIR.EXE.
Place them in your "COMM" directory and you can leave your CFG
file. POWERNODE will reconfigure and add some new options.
You can then move to the section on Revision I to pick up the
new enhancements as you SMOKE the docs.
Also, there are two extra new enhancements to POWERNODE you can
activate by placing Gordon Haff's Directory Freedom ( DF.COM )
and Peter Norton's Utilities Directory Sort ( DS.EXE ) in
the same directory with POWERNODE. If POWERNODE senses these
files in its directory, it will add new options to the menu
screens, including the ability to instantly and permanently
sort the upload directory listing. Directory Freedom supplies
a complete file management system within POWERNODE.
There's a bunch of new features. POWERNODE has the ability to
run from any directory you specify. You can place POWERNODE
and your transfer protocol programs into a different utility
directory and set an environment variable "PNODE=path" that'll
point to where you wanna run'em from.
Full support has been added for the PUMA protocol. A new toggle
switch allows you to toggle MobyTurbo OFF and ON, either in
the main uploads/downloads, or in the DSZ shell. POWERNODE now
has a "fast single key option" that'll fast sort the upload
directory. If you install Directory Freedom in POWERNODE'S
"dir", the [F]iledir command in the Main Menu will change to
[F]reedom and you're one key away from a full blown file
manager system within POWERNODE. With ability to TAG, MOVE,
COPY, DELETE and RENAME files. When you exit from Directory
Freedom, you'll be right back at POWERNODE'S Main Menu screen.
The "batch upload" lets you create from the [C]reate option and
now supports both Puma and Ymodem-G. You now can build upload
sets and from the "Main Menu" with only one key, upload'em via
ZModem, ZMoby, Ymodem-G, Superk8, SuperKG, Lynx and Puma
protocols. The file sets are totally interchangeable. You can
make one fileset and use any or all of these protocols to
upload the set with one keystroke automatically.
This revision of POWERNODE has been optimized and tested
extensively with fire modems and fast iron. ( HST 14.4k
modems with com ports locked at 38,400 baud ).
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 2
REMEMBER.. you can now register your POWERNODE using VISA/MC
plastic from Datawarp BBS, the home of EZReader and Bytebro
support. See the registration page at the end of the docs.

║ [ New Install ] ║
╚═════════════════╝
Installation instructions.. Install the three POWERNODE files
in the directory you run your communications program from,
with DSZ.COM, BIMODEM.COM ,BICONFIG.COM, JMODEM.COM, SUPERK.COM
SUPERK.000, SKA.COM and LYNX.EXE. All of these are available
from BBS systems.. Look for the following zip files. The
number fields will contain the latest date or revision. These
are the latest as of release of POWERNODE G.
DSZ0128.ZIP This is the ZModem DSZ module. You will
need a version after DSZ1022.ZIP in
order to utilize MobyTurbo in DSZ90.
The only file you will need from this
package is DSZ.COM.
JMODEM The JModem protocol is included in this
package with the permission of it's
author Dick Johnson, of the Program
eXchange in Boulder Colorado.
BIMOD120.ZIP The BiModem module from Erik
Technologies. This contains all you
need for a full Bimodem system under
POWERNODE. The only files you need are
BIMODEM.COM and BICONFIG.COM.
SK&J0704.ZIP This is SuperK8 protocol from Crater
Rim Software. The files you need are
SUPERK.COM, SUPERK.000, SKA.COM. Later
revisions are available that contain a
5-second delay before the transfer.
LYNX302.ZIP This is the LYNX protocol package from
Matthew Thomas. This is a Shareware
version that replaces the earlier version
that is supplied with POWERNODE.
PUMA100.ZIP The PUMA protocol also by Matt Thomas.
This will probably be a replacement for
LYNX eventually.
For a full blown system, the following files MUST be in your
"COMM" directory.
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 3
POWERN.EXE All of these files are supplied in this
BBBI.EXE archive file; ready to run.
BDIR.EXE
JMODEM.COM
LYNX.EXE ( older version. see below )
BIMODEM.COM Both supplied in BIMOD110.ZIP
BICONFIG.COM
SUPERK.COM Supplied in SK&J0704.ZIP
SUPERK.000
SKA.COM
DSZ.COM Supplied with the DSZXXXX.ZIP
LYNX.EXE Supplied with LYNX302.ZIP
PUMA.EXE Supplied with PUMA100.ZIP
Note that if you leave any of the lower files out POWERNODE,
they will still run fine. You just won't be able to use the
appropriate protocols from POWERNODE. When you try, you will
be warned of the file that doesn't exist, and returned to your
"COMM" program.
Now as an option, you can add some extra features to POWERNODE
by installing two files into the directory along with it. The
two files are Directory Sort ( DS.EXE ) which comes in Peter
Norton's "Norton Utilities" package, an excellent commercial
utility set that's available at software shops, and Gordon
Haff's Directory Freedom ( DF.COM ) which is available on the
boards as a shareware release ( DF302.ZIP ).
With the addition of these files, a new option will appear on
the Protocol menu of [S]ort Upload Directory. Hitting "S" will
spawn Norton's Directory Sort and sort the upload directory in
alphabetical order very quickly. Also on the Main Menu, the old
command [F]iledir will be replaced by [F]reedom. Hitting the
"F" key will bring up Directory Freedom; a full blown small
and excellent utility for complete file management. By default,
Directory Freedom will come up pointing to your current upload
directory. But, you have an option window to select a different
path. As usual, hitting <CR> will select the current upload
directory.
POWERNODE has three volume setting to the sounds. They are set
with an environment variable JModem. Use this in your
autoexec.bat or in a batch file that calls POWERNODE.
set jmodem=shutup causes POWERNODE to be completely silent.
set jmodem=loud extra alarms to wake the dead
the default ( using no autoexec statement.. ), or typing..
set jmodem=
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 4
allows for moderate sound effects announcing the end of batch
transfers, and error conditions.
If you wanna run POWERNODE from a directory other than where
your "COMM" programs resides, set an environment variable to point
to where POWERNODE and your protocol files are located.
set pnode=c:\util
This in your autoexec.bat file will tell POWERNODE to look in
directory c:\util for it's CONFIG and the protocol files.
POWERNODE runs from a configuration file "PNODE.CFG" that allows
you to customize some of the options. POWERNODE is designed to
configure itself. Most of the time the CONFIG file it creates
will run fine on your system. About the only thing that may
need to be changed is the com port. But the default is port 1.
The easiest way to create a CONFIG file is to just run
POWERNODE from the DOS prompt. After placing POWERNODE in your
terminal directory, enter "POWERN". When the main screen
appears; hit ESCape. POWERNODE will create a configuration file
name PNODE.CFG with all the defaults in it. Edit this file to
what you want. Use any ASCII editor, even EDLIN if you're
masochistic or running CTTY. Just no word processor in
document mode and for God's sake no AUTOCAD wireframe edits.
Here is a default file..
1 com port
c:\com\loads download directory
c:\qmail\ upload directory
dsz.com dsz type
port 1 pB4096 ha both rz dsz receive command
port 1 pB4096 ha both sz dsz send command
*.* directory file mask
LOG jmodem logs enable
norecover dsz/lynx recovery switch
2400 dsz/lynx port speed
z current default protocol
batch SuperK batch setting
R /2400 /1 /S /H Lynx receive command
S /2400 /1 /S /H Lynx send command
p1 n+ x+ r Puma receive command
p1 n+ x+ s Puma send command
off Mobyturbo setting
If you need to run another com port, change the first line and
run it again. POWERNODE will change the lower DSZ Lynx and
Puma parameters to reflect the new port. You WILL wanna
change line 2 to reflect your download directory; where you
want your downloaded files to reside. if you're running
SUPERK or Lynx, make sure that line 10 ( dsz/lynx port speed )
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 5
reflects your correct speed. The default is 2400. If you're
running 1200 baud, change the lower line to 1200.
Note that versions of DSZ after 10/88 do not support the
passing of download paths; at least until now. Revision E
and later of POWERNODE uses the DSZ shell for ZModem downloads
and will correctly place the downloaded files in the directory
listed in line 2 of PNODE.CFG. It will also add automated
ZModem downloads to any "COMM" program. Now Procomm Boyan COMMO
and GT users can enjoy the same autodownloads that Telix users
enjoy without having to change "COMM" programs. AND even Telix
users can shut automatic Telix ZModem OFF and play with the
great new whale of a protocol "MobyTurbo". Or just use DSZ which
always gives better results with 38k port modems.
To run POWERNODE, you need to boot your "COMM"unications
program and install it in one of your hotkeys..
╔═══════════╗
║[ PROCOMM ]║
╚═══════════╝
From the terminal screen, hit ALT-S to bring up setup. Drop to
the FILE/PATH option and execute. In the path box for ALT-J,
enter POWERN.EXE and hit RETURN. Now POWERNODE will execute from
Procomm when you hit the ALT-J key (Jmodem). POWERNODE was
written using Procomm to test it initially. For old Procomm
2.4.2/3 users, use the Alt-A editor configuration key and call
POWERNODE up with Alt-A.
╔═════════╗
║[ TELIX ]║
╚═════════╝
From the Terminal Page, hit ALT-O to bring up the configuration
menu, and move to filenames and paths option. Then in box H enter
POWERN.EXE. Now POWERNODE will run from Telix whenever you
press the ALT-A key. POWERNODE is easily the best way to use
Performance protocols out of Telix. To take advantage of
DSZ-90's MobyTurbo do the following. In Telix's config menu
(alt-o) under Terminal Option on line M, change the AutoZModem
to NO. This will allow you to use POWERNODE on downloads,
which is not only, the only way to run 38k baud, but the only
way to buy the extra genuine CPS that MobyTurbo provides at
any baud rate. If you miss autoZModem, just enter the [S]hell
option from the main window with MobyTurbo turned on when you
are ready to start downloading via ZModem and enjoy MobyTurbo
automatic ZModem downloads.
╔══════════╗
║[ QMODEM ]║
╚══════════╝
Select ALT-J from Qmodem 4.0 to select function key definitions.
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 6
Select a function key line and add as definition on that line..
F1 @SHELLX POWERN
this will run POWERNODE from Qmodem when you hit the Function
1 "F1" key. Running POWERNODE as a bimodem engine under Qmodem
is a lot like flying an F-15. Note: You should enter the
following little batch file as your Z parameter in Qmodem.
create a file Z.BAT
echo off
POWERN D Z
echo on
Now install it with Qmodem as your ZModem download batch file.
POWERNODE will run as your auto ZModem transfer engine. The
benefit is you can pop up POWERNODE anytime you want and
switch the error recovery OFF an ON for your Qmodem auto
ZModem downloads. Also you can use the three levels of audio
alarms to signal the end of your file transfers with ZModem
under Qmodem. And of course, the colors look a lot nicer than
just running DSZ from the Z parameter. It's handy to be able
to reset recovery so that you don't accidentally trash a mail
package file. This will give you something Telix users don't
have: MobyTurbo AutoZModem.!
╔═════════╗
║[ COMMO ]║
╚═════════╝
The greatest little "COMM" program in the world. Fred Bruckner's
COMMO (COMMO302.ZIP) is to "COMM" programs what Vern Buerg's LIST
is to textfile utilities. Small, FAST and powerful; only 18k
in size. It is the ultimate system for folks with limited
memory and disk space. The perfect laptop "COMM" program
integrates totally with POWERNODE. COMMO's ability to define
function keys allows you to call any and all of the POWERNODE
menu functions by pressing a single function key. And,
POWERNODE is the BEST way to run advanced protocols under
COMMO for an incredibly small and powerful communications
system. Enter ALT-M to enter the macro configuration area. Then
enter the following as macro's, or simply edit the COMMO.MAC
file and paste the text from these docs into your .MAC file.
{Cmd,F1} {POWERN %n}
this will call POWERNODE up to the Main Menu from COMMO when
you hit the F1 key..
You can get serious and assign more keys. This example assigns
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 7
function keys F2 thru F9 to POWERNODE commands, and gives
COMMO one of the most powerful instant transfer interfaces on
the planet. This is the configuration I use on my laptop.
{c,F2} {POWERN S %n} Enter the DSZ shell
from COMMO for
automatic ZModem
downloads like Telix
and Qmodem. F1
returns you to
COMMO.
{c,F3} {POWERN C %n} Program a batch
upload set for
ZModem, Lynx,
Superk8 and SuperK8G
protocols.
{c,F4} {POWERN Z %n} Upload the fileset
with DSZ ZModem.
{c,F5} {POWERN L %n} Upload fileset with
Lynx batch upload.
{c,F6} {POWERN K %n} Upload fileset with
SuperK8 protocol.
{c,F7} {POWERN G %n} Upload fileset with
SuperK8GMNP protocol.
{c,F8} {POWERN M %n} Enter the menu to
program a complete
Bimodem transfer.
{c,F9} {POWERN B %n} Start the programmed
Bimodem transfer.
All of the standard POWERNODE batch commands described later
can be used to really customize COMMO as a protocol driving
system.
╔═════════════╗
║[ BOYAN 4.0 ]║
╚═════════════╝
Ohh Boyyyann.. Hit ALT-C and go into the [S] Screen; Sound &
Memory Configuration Screen. Select item L and set the memory
reserved for DOS at 180k. This leaves enough room for
POWERNODE and DSZ ,JMODEM, BIMODEM, SUPERK and LYNX to work..
1. Enter M for the macro configuration menu.
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 8
2. Enter H to configure the F1 through F10 keys
3. Enter 71 to configure the F1 key as a macro
4. Type -\DC[POWERN] and enter.
Now POWERNODE will run from Boyan when you hit the F1 key. And
it will come up fast... so make sure and duck..!!
╔════════════════╗
║[ GT-POWERCOMM ]║
╚════════════════╝
On GT Rev. 1400 and above from the Main Menu, select ALT-M to
enter the Macro Management Area. Select an unused function key
F1-F10 and enter the following string after the selected
function.. example F-1.. F1 = {@=}powern| this will execute
POWERNODE when you press the F1 function key. And try this one
F2 = {@=}powern m|
this will take you directly into the menu to create a bimodem
upload/download set when you press the F2 key.
F3 = {@=}powern b|
this will take you straight into a Bimodem transfer when you
hit the F3 key.
F4 = {@=}powern s|
will take you straight into the DSZ shell. For automated DSZ
downloads just like Telix and Qmodem offer..
POWERNODE and GT have always been great together; both are
very fast and flashy. And, GT still has the best phone
directory system and host mode around since POWERNODE comes
up real fast at the strike of a function key..! Since GT
passes parameters to function key files, you can use any of
the batch file commands for instant access from GT Powercomm.
╔════════════════════════╗
║ The POWERNODE Menus ║
╚════════════════════════╝
POWERNODE uses filesets to support batch uploads. You can
simply tag files from your drives, using file windows and
tagging into one large upload fileset with the [C]reate
option from the Main Menu. After programming the fileset,
simply hit one key from the Main Menu to transfer all the
files you've programmed using any of six transfer protocols.
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 9
Single file transfers (downloads) are activated by merely
selecting Down or Up from the Main Menu. POWERNODE will
then guide you thru the transfer without having to even
type filenames in most cases.
When you first run POWERNODE, you will be at the Main Menu
screen. You can run POWERNODE offline to get familiar. Just
enter POWERN at the DOS prompt in your "COMM" directory. The
ESCape key will exit back to Dos. Main options are:
[U] Uploads Takes you to a menu to select an upload protocol.
This option is for when you wanna upload a
SINGLE file to a BBS system. You will then be
placed in the protocol window to select the
transfer protocol you wanna use. POWERNODE
remembers the last protocol you used, and
displays it in a window. Just hit RETURN or ENTER
to select your default protocol. Then you will be
prompted for a path to the file. POWERNODE
remembers the last drive and directory you
uploaded from also. So if you hit RETURN or ENTER
when prompted for the upload path, you will be
taken to the last drive/dir that you used. Even
if it was two weeks ago.
A screen will pop up showing the files in that
directory. From the file directory screen you can
press ENTER over the subdirectory names or the
".." to change directories and move around your
disk if you should hit the wrong directory. You
will never need to type filenames. A hilite bar
will be displayed over the directory listing. As
soon as you move the hilite bar over the file you
wanna transfer, and press the ENTER key, the file
transfer will begin. When finished you will be
returned to your "COMM" program.
This is called a "point and shoot" menu system.
All of the file directories offer mouse support
so you can tag files with your mouse.
[D] Download Takes you to a menu to select a download
protocol. This option is used to download from
any protocol except Bimodem. (Bimodem transfers
both ways at once..so upload and download aren't
really applicable, you are doing both).
Just select the transfer protocol you wanna use
and the transfer will begin. Request the transfer
from the board first, then enter POWERNODE and
start the download on your end.
Note that the protocol XModem-1kG as shown in
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 10
the POWERNODE download window is sometimes
erroneously called Qmodem-G on some boards, or
Xmodem-G (Qmodem). Technically it is XModem-1k
with error detection, but no correction. It does
not pass filenames (which is a requirement for
Ymodem), and only downloads one file at a time.
It is however the theoretically fastest protocol
for fast iron and high speed modems.
POWERNODE remembers the last protocol you used
and displays it in a window. To select the last
protocol you used, just hit RETURN or ENTER.
Superk, DSZ ZModem/YModem, Puma and Lynx all
support batch downloads from here. So, you can
download multiple files if your BBS permits it,
without having to enter any filenames.
SuperK has a single file mode that you can toggle
ON and OFF from the protocol window. A small
popup window at the lower right of the screen
will show you the SuperK status; either BATCH or
SINGLE file. And a [T]oggle command will switch
between them. POWERNODE will remember this switch
setting. So, if you set it and don't change
transfer types, you will never have to touch it
again. On BBS systems, if you see SuperK8 single
file, and SuperK8 batch available, ALWAYS use
batch. It passes full filenames and does multiple
files.
Jmodem, the Xmodem protocols, and SuperK8 single
file mode will all prompt for filenames. The
"Drunkman Download System" allows you to just hit
ENTER to name the file the current date and time
for easy downloads without typing filenames.
[S] Shell Takes you straight into the DSZ shell. In the
shell you are in a mini "COMM" program that will
automatically download ZModem files without you
typing in anything except the download request.
This will give you Telix type automatic ZModem
downloads no matter what your "COMM" program. Enter
[S] and then hit return. The BBS prompt will
appear and you can go right on as if you were
still in your "COMM" program. When you request the
ZModem download files from the BBS, the transfer
will automatically begin.
The shell uncripples DSZ, so if you're using an
unregistered version of DSZ after 10/88, your
downloads will STILL be placed in the correct
download directory you specified in the PNODE.CFG
file. Hitting F1 brings you right back to your
"COMM" program. Hitting the F3 key will start a
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 11
Ymodem-B (true Ymodem) download after
requesting the file(s) from the host system.
A help screen is displayed when you initially
enter the shell to guide you the first time
through. MobyTurbo if turned on is supported in
the Shell. Your autoZModem downloads will be
MobyTurbo if you have previously set it ON in
POWERNODE. A Moby logo is displayed to show you
that MobyTurbo is enabled in the shell.
[C] Create Use this option to create batch upload sets for
DSZ ZModem, Lynx Puma Ymodem-G and SuperK. You
can tag files off your disk to go into the
upload. It will create an upload file set that
you can upload with ZModem, Lynx, SuperK8, or
SuperK8G MNP, Ymodem-G or Puma. There's no limit
on the number of files you can tag for upload
with POWERNODE. ProDoor will limit you many times
to 50 files, but we have transferred over 300 in
ONE ZModem transfer.
[Z] Zbatch Zbatch starts a batch ZModem upload to the BBS.
This takes all the files you tagged in the "C"
option above and transfers them all in one upload
using DSZ ZModem. MobyTurbo is supported if you
have it turned ON.
[K] Kbatch Kbatch starts a batch SuperK upload to the BBS.
This takes all the files you tagged in the "C"
option above and transfers them all in one upload
using the SuperK8 protocol.
[L] Lbatch Lbatch starts a batch Lynx upload to the BBS.
This takes all the files you tagged in the "C"
option above and transfers them all in one upload
using the Lynx protocol.
[G] Gbatch Gbatch starts a batch SuperKG upload to the BBS.
This takes all the files you tagged in the "C"
option above and transfers them all in one upload
using the SuperKG MNP protocol.
[P] Pbatch Pbatch starts a batch Puma upload to the BBS.
All the tagged files in the fileset are uploaded
with the new Puma transfer protocol.
[Y] YGbatch YGbatch starts a batch Ymodem-G upload to the BBS.
This uploads the entire fileset via Ymodem-G.
Note that the upload set you create with "C" stays in the
system until you erase the FILES.ZUP file or [C]reate a new
upload set. If you have a bunch of new files you wanna
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 12
spread around, use the "C" option to create a file list. Then
just log into your favorite BBS's that support batch upload
and use the same set on each board. Just hitting [Z] will
upload the set with ZModem, [K] will upload it with SuperK,
[L] will use Lynx and [G] will transfer the set with SuperKG.
[P] will use the Puma protocol and [Y] will use Ymodem-G.
After the upload, you can move onto the next board without
having to retag any files. You can even use [Z] on one board
to upload the set with ZModem and [K] on the next board to
upload the same set with SuperK.
[M] MakeBi Here is where you create your Bimodem
upload/download file set. This will take you into
a menued system to program the entire Bimodem
session. Tagging uploads from your drives and
downloads from a BBS list or captured log file.
You can program the entire Bimodem session
offline using your system disks for uploads and a
filelist or captured filelist screen from the
BBS for downloads; never having to type in a
single filename. Manual entry is supported also.
[B] Bimodem This starts the Bimodem transfer you programmed
in the [M]ake Bimodem section above. All uploads,
downloads, and file descriptions are transferred
automatically via Bimodem to the BBS.
Note that there's a section later in the docs that fully
explains Bimodem installation, and further explains the Bimodem
commands from POWERNODE.
Depending on whether Gordon Haff's DF.COM (DF302.ZIP) is in
POWERNODE'S directory, this command will do one of two things.
Without DF.COM:
[F] Filedir This brings up a color coded directory display so
you can quickly check the file directories. Just
supply the path and you will get a directory
display that color hilites .ZIP, .ARC, .PAK, .LZH
,.GIF, .QWK and .REP files so they are easier to
spot. When the file "dir" ends you will be returned
to POWERNODE'S main screen.
With DF.COM In POWERNODE'S Directory:
[F] Freedom This brings up Gordon Haff's great Directory
Freedom program that will tag delete, copy, move,
rename and list files in your directory. You will
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 13
first be prompted for a pathname with the current
default upload directory as default. Hit ENTER
to use the upload dir, or enter a new path for
your file management. When done working with
files in Directory Freedom, you will be returned
to POWERNODE'S Main Screen.
[T] ToggleR This feature toggles or switches the error
recovery OFF an ON for ZModem, Lynx, and Puma. A
window to the right of the main display shows the
current state of the switch. If recovery is ON,
the protocols will look for a partially
downloaded file (if your previous transfer was
cut off) and will download ONLY the part needed
to make the file whole. That way you don't have
to re-download the entire file again. If
recovery is OFF, then the protocols will delete
the existing partial file and completely
re-download the file over again.
Note that if you use Qmodem and use POWERNODE as
the Z.BAT file as explained in the Qmodem
installation, you can use this toggle to quickly
switch your Qmodem AutoZModem downloads from
Recovery mode to Overwrite mode.

║ POWERNODE via Batch ║
╚════════════════════════╝
For batch file drivers, POWERNODE now supports arguments on the
command line. You can install POWERNODE features as external
protocols in your "COMM" program, or call a simple batch file
from a key macro to do particular functions. This gives you
the power to assign single hot keys or macros to accomplish
advanced POWERNODE functions by pressing ONLY ONE KEY. This
works great for installing POWERNODE with COMMO for the
greatest little COMM powertool in the world..!
POWERN C
This will take you to the Create batch file system to program
a DSZ ZModem, SuperK8(G), Puma, Ymodem-G or Lynx batch upload.
POWERN Z
This will start an auto ZModem upload to a BBS. After
selecting the files with the "C" option. Note that this
command on the menu has changed from the earlier "A"
command for AutoZModem. The "A" command is still recognized
to maintain compatibilty so your batch files and habits
can remain the same. It just isn't on the menu anymore and
the "Z" command works.

The following are the list of features added to POWERNODE by
revision during the past year. Starting with this revision.
╔═══════════════════════════════╗
║ About POWERNODE Revision I.. ║
╚═══════════════════════════════╝
Revision I adds full support for the new PUMA transfer
protocol by Matt Thomas, the author of Lynx. This is an
exciting protocol. It is fast, colorful, and handles high
speed modems with great speed and grace. Puma single file
uploads, batch uploads, and batch/single downloads are fully
supported. And the file transfer sets your program with the
[C] option from the Main Menu and are totally compatible
with the Puma protocol. The Puma command line is brought
into the PNODE.CFG file so if you wanna customize your puma
installation just edit the .CFG file.
Full support is now added for Ymodem-G, including the same
batch upload ability provided for the other power protocols
thru the [C]reate option in the Main Menu. And the programming
of upload filesets.
MobyTurbo is supported with a switch that toggles it ON or
OFF. The switch will stay set until you manually reset it
again. The MobyTurbo status is always displayed on the
Transfer Protocol menu window. Enabling MobyTurbo enables it
not only in the upload/download windows, but also in the
[S]hell to DSZ option from the Main Menu. MobyTurbo is fully
supported in the DSZ shell. MobyTurbo is an enhancement to
DSZ-90 the new DSZ ZModem release and is available in DSZ
releases after 01/22/90. If you use an earlier version, do
not enable MobyTurbo since DSZ doesn't know what the hell to
do with the command and will squawk at you.
Support has been added to trigger Peter Norton's Disk Sort
utility from the transfer window on the upload directory. Or
any directory you wanna specify. Merely place DS.EXE from
the Norton Utilities in the directory with POWERNODE and the
[S]ort option will automagically appear on the screen in the
Protocol Window. The Norton Utilities (tm) is commercial
software owned and sold by Peter Norton and available at
computer software stores across the country.
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 16
In like manner, inserting Gordon Haff's excellent Directory
Freedom DF.COM in the directory with POWERNODE, will change
the old [F]iledir prompt at the Main Menu into [F] Directory
Freedom. Directory Freedom is an excellent little file
management system, that in point of fact blows away the
internal system in Boyan, or any other "COMM" program. And it's
one keystroke away from POWERNODE. When done in Freedom by
hitting ESCape, you are returned to POWERNODE'S Main Menu.
Directory Freedom is available as DF302.ZIP on BBS systems and
is Shareware. And Gordon deserves the modest registration.
Crater Rim's JModem Batch has been dropped since it is still
screwed up on every board I can find except the authors. It's
awesome watching a batch transfer when the second file comes
up listed as 498 meg in size, and you seem to remember it was
only 18k in the file listing.
47 other substantial changes have been made to the program in
this revision that I won't elaborate on. It has been tested
extensively with 14.4k modems and 38k locked ports and fine
tuned for performance with fast iron and fire modems.
╔═══════════════════════════════╗
║ About POWERNODE Revision H.. ║
╚═══════════════════════════════╝
Revsion H adds full support for SuperK8G MNP protocol. This is
Crater Rim's "G" protocol for fast iron, and error correction
modems using MNP. Both the single file and batch modes are
supported, including FULL support of batch uploads with the
current POWERNODE file tagging system.
A new switch on the protocol window selects from SINGLE file
or BATCH mode with SuperK. This is to support the SuperK
single file mode. This protocol is for obsolete boards that
cannot handle batch transfers, or for boards that wish to
block batch transfers. SINGLE mode does nothing that BATCH
mode will not do, except like XModem it will not even pass
filenames on the download, and of course it can ONLY transfer
a single file per transfer. The SINGLE and BATCH modes are
incompatible and the transfer will abort if you use the wrong
protocol type. The setting is displayed in a window on the
lower right of the screen when the protocol selection menu is
up. And this setting will apply to both SuperK8 and SuperK8G
protocols. The [T]oggle command from the protocol menu will
switch the mode from BATCH to SINGLE and back. As always,
POWERNODE will remember the setting of the switch and once you
set it, will remain until you manually change it later.
Revision H adds support for two more protocols to the batch
upload crew. Both Lynx and SuperKG MNP can now use the SAME
batch upload sets you have been using with ZModem and SuperK8.
The sets are totally interchangeable, so you have to only tag
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 17
a group of new files once. You can even upload them all in
ONE upload using any of six different protocols. The file-
list that you create with the [C]reate option from the Main
Menu will stay in the system until you manually erase it;
even if you shut down. And you can instantly transfer the
set of tagged files with any of the four transfer protocols
by pressing one key from the Main Menu.
A new environment variable PNODE can be used to set the path
to all your transfer protocols and POWERNODE itself. This is
so you can run POWERNODE and all your transfer utilities from
a directory other than the current one your "COMM" program runs
in.
set pnode=c:\com\util
Will cause POWERNODE to use the UTIL directory for all it's
work, and to find all the transfer protocols there. Note that
if you do this you will have to configure SuperK to find it's
overlay file by entering SUPERK @, and specifiying the path to
the overlay file, or SuperK will fail when it can't find it's
support file SUPERK.000.
Added support documentation for Fred Bruckner's amazing COMMO
communications transfer. The package is so beautiful, small
and fast, and integrates so seamlessly with POWERNODE that
it's almost as if they were made for each other. Look for
COMMO302.ZIP and check out a full function "COMM" program that's
18k in size.
Matt Thomas's Lynx transfer protocol is becoming popular, and
he has worked his tail off enhancing it. Because of it's
growing flexibility the LYNX command lines, the arguments
passed to LYNX are brought out to the configuration file
PNODE.CFG so you can customize your installation of LYNX, just
as you can your DSZ installation.
POWERNODE H was actually held back for a time because LYNX
3.00 and LYNX 3.01 would not run under Qmodem. This has been
fixed with LYNX 3.02, but There's still a minor problem. On
some UART's ( NEC in particular ) LYNX has trouble reading the
UART speed. You will find a transfer starting on your end with
LYNX at 3 baud ! ( estimated file transfer times of two hours
for 12k files.. ). I've found this gives real problems when
trying to transfer with HST duals, ( they don't seem to have a
"concept" of 3 baud ! ) ,so to eliminate this problem POWERNODE
uses the speed in the PNODE.CFG file for SuperK to force the
speed down the UART's throat and prevent the problem from
occuring on bastard UARTs.
╔═══════════════════════════════╗
║ About POWERNODE Revision G.. ║
╚═══════════════════════════════╝
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 18
Revision G adds two new protocols to the arsenal and one old
one. SuperK8 and LYNX are new and due to popular demand DSZ's
Ymodem-G is added also. The benefits are as follows.
SuperK8 is very fast. Expect to see above 260 CPS on many
machines at 2400 baud with no compression. Standard modems. It
transfers batch up and down and passes all filename
information both ways. SuperK is a screamer and outperforms
virtually any other protocol except bimodem (when running
stereo). Full SuperK support is provided in POWERNODE
including batch uploads and downloads and selectable error
recovery. Note that if you have strange problems with SuperK,
There's a program in the SK&J0506.ZIP that will allow you to
reset the number of stacks used in SuperK. Increase both
minimum and maximum to 2048 and it will clear up the problems.
Problems include strange erratic operation and ZIP crc errors
in downloaded files.
Lynx is a protocol that is designed for FAST iron. Modems
operating from 9600 baud to 56k baud. It runs fine on slower
systems but really shines running fast. It does selective RLE
compression on packets if it helps them, and you can see it
switching to RLE on the transfer screen. On text files Lynx is
mind blowingly fast due to the added compression factor. And
Lynx is free, public domain just like Jmodem. That's why the
Lynx file is already provided with Jmodem in the POWERNODE
archive. The recovery switch from the Main Menu turns file
recovery OFF an ON with Lynx as well as DSZ and SuperK.
Ymodem-G is for fast modems and is the original Ymodem batch
protocol with error detection but no correction. It supports
batch downloads and is called with the Y option. Note that
Xmodem 1-k is still supported but its letter designation has
changed from Y to X to make room for true Ymodem. So any batch
files you have using Y to call Xmodem -1k should be changed to
X. Ymodem-B downloads are still supported from the DSZ shell
by pressing the F3 key to start the transfer on your end. Note
also that the old [A] command from the Main Menu has been
changed to [Z] for starting ZModem batch uploads. The [A]
command is still recognized by POWERNODE interactively so your
habits and your batch files can remain unchanged.
In additon to remembering your last upload directory POWERNODE
now remembers your last used protocol, whether uploads or
downloads. In the protocol screen is a new window that
displays the last protocol you used for uploads or downloads.
Just hit RETURN or ENTER to select the "last used". As with
the other settings your last used protocol is saved when you
shut POWERNODE down. And will remain set until you
specifically change it by calling out another protcol for a
transfer. This was an idea a friend from Sleepy, Tom Bullard
gave me some time back.. I think it got mixed with some DSZ
docs and I smoked it in my bong. But I remembered the idea
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 19
which we called "blast from the past" and it is included now.
Also revison G adds enhancements to all the Bimodem sections,
and full support of the new Bimodem version 1.10 released
6/89. The BBBI.EXE module has been modified to build paths and
will run standalone. What this means is that if you wanna
use the Bimodem PTH building module outside of POWERNODE just
put the following in a batch file, macro, or type it at the
DOS prompt.
BBBI [ pthpath uploadpath ]
or just
BBBI
The paths are totally optional and usually aren't used. When
used the pthpath is the path your bimodem.pth file resides in,
(usually the current directory), and uploadpath is the path
you wanna start pulling uploads from. If no arguments are
provided.. ie. just entering BBBI at the command or thru a
batch the Bytebro Bimodem module will run and just use the
current directory for defaults. This lets you build bimodem
upload/download sets without even going thru POWERNODE. You
can assign it to a hotkey or just run it at the DOS prompt
before you log on to build the bimodem upload/download set.
Note that running BBBI is equivalent to running POWERN M from
the DOS prompt or a hotkey or batch, with the exception that
going thru POWERNODE will add POWERNODE'S default upload dir
and pass it to BBBI so the default for upload file tagging
will be the last directory you uploaded from in POWERNODE.
From within the bimodem module you also now have the
capability of starting the bimodem transfer. So if ALL you
want from POWERNODE is Bimodem support you can actually just
use the BBBI.EXE file and call it up the same way you do
POWERNODE. But if all you want from POWERNODE is Bimodem
support you are nuts..! This does however give you the ability
to start the bimodem transfer without going back to the main
POWERNODE menu, which was the reason it was implemented.
Also the [F]ile display at the Main Menu now returns to
POWERNODE instead of the "COMM" program. This was requested so
file browsers could stay inside the Node while scanning
files..
There are now three different volume settings for the sounds
generated by POWERNODE. We quieted it up and then folks in St.
Louis began screaming because they wanted it loud enough to
call them from out of the room during large batch transfers.
The three sound levels are as follows, and are set by entering
the following at the DOS prompt or from your autoexec.bat
file, or from a batch file that calls your "COMM" program.
set jmodem=shutup this will cause POWERNODE to be
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 20
completely silent..
set jmodem=loud this will add extra alarms at the end
of ZModem-batch, SuperK batch and Lynx
batch downloads, as well as adding
extra alarms to the end of Bimodem
transfers.
The default ( set jmodem = ) is that POWERNODE will make alarm
sounds at the end of transfers but will hold it down to a
subdued level.. The reason we use the JMODEM variable is that
Dick Johnson already uses it with Jmodem ( jmodem=shutup ) to
stop the racetrack music at the end of transfers, and this way
we can shut POWERNODE up without using extra environment
space.
DSZ ZModem is completely uncrippled now by Node. Both the DSZ
shell and the ZModem download window will drop downloaded
files in the directory specified in line 2 of your config
file. Whether your DSZ is registered or not..!
POWERNODE rev G is being distributed to registered users only
during first distribution. It is the registered users
perrogative to pass the file around to others. If you
downloaded this file from a public BBS it is yours,
compliments of a registered user who decided to allow you to
share in the power of a utility that he has paid for.
╔═══════════════════════════════╗
║ About POWERNODE Revision F.. ║
╚═══════════════════════════════╝
Revision F adds a whole new Bimodem system to POWERNODE. In
fact the best Bimodem support system bar none.. Some
enhancements include..
Toggle command to switch ZModem error recovery ON and OFF.
From the Main Menu hit T to toggle DSZ autorecovery off. It
will remain in the toggled state on/off until you change it
again.. Even if you shut down and come back two days later
recovery will be set as you left it. The recovery switch is
effective only from the DSZ download window, not from the DSZ
shell. And any setting you make with registered DSZ using the
DSZOPT= variable will override any command line switch. So to
be functional do not specify y or r as switches in DSZOPT.
New muffler. Adding the line
set jmodem=shutup
to your autoexec batch file or from the command line will shut
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 21
Jmodem up, but also POWERNODE will remain quiet. This will
prevent your spouse from wondering what those screams are in
your computer room late at night. To enable the sounds enter
set jmodem=
at the command line.
Modified file list display now hilites ZIP's ARC/PAK/GIF and
now QWK and REP mail packet files.
Default of .ARC files in the Drunkman Download system has been
changed to .ZIP. Keep zippin.. the ARC is almost sunk..!
The whole program has been converted from Turbo Pascal 4.0 to
5.0 and There's a dramatic increase in speed.
The real change in POWERNODE Rev F is Bimodem. And Bimodem is
absolutely amazing.. 470 CPS on a standard 2400 baud modem
without MNP. Transferring files in both directions at once..
uploading AND downloading while at the same time chatting with
a sysop in a split screen chat window.. this is the stuff file
phreak dreams are made of. POWERNODE Revision F has the most
powerful Bimodem support system available today. Use popup
file tagging windows to select your transfer sets, manually
enter filenames for downloads or call up a BBS filelist or
captured filelist in a "COMM"log and POWERNODE will place it up
on the screen and you can move a hilite bar up and down and
tag files for your downloads while you are browsing the text
descriptions. You can program your whole transfer session
offline, using the disks on your system for upload tagging,
and a downloaded file list for your downloads.. Log into a
BBS, start a transfer and leave.. Everything else,
descriptions etc are all taken care of by Bimodem and
POWERNODE. If you use the Bytebrother's BROdoor on PCBoard
systems use the T option for transfer and exit and when your
session is done you will automatically be logged off.
A typical Bimodem session is to log onto a BBS, open a log and
check the new files listing. Close the log and go into
POWERNODE. Build your uploads before you log on and now just
pull the log you made into POWERNODE and tag the files for
downloads as you scroll them down the screen. Enter M for
makefile, D for download, F for Filelist and you will be
prompted for a log file or filelist. Enter the path/filename
and it will be pulled up onto the screen and you can tag files
for downloads. Start the Bimodem transfer and that's it. You
can transfer dozens of files without having to type a
filename.
POWERNODE Bimodem Commands
[M]ake Bimod Enter this option to enter the section of
POWERNODE that you make your bimodem file
sets in. Select Upload or Download and
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 22
manual or File entry. With Manual entry you
just type in the names of the files you want
to upload or download. With the File
selection on uploads you tag files off your
disk(s) from a file window, and on downloads
you can pull a BBS log or filelist into a
window and just tag the download files.
In this way you program your entire bimodem
session and let the computers hassle with
all the file names and descriptions, in fact
the whole transfer. It doesn't matter what
order you put the uploads/downloads. You can
even make part of a list and come back later
and finish it up.
[B]imodem Start the Bimodem transfer. The files you
entered into the Bimodem set in the Make
window will now all be transferred. Uploads
and Downloads. AT THE SAME TIME.
To install Bimodem get the latest Bimodem release ( current
beta is BIMOD120.ZIP ) and install the BIMODEM.COM and the
BICONFIG.COM program in the "COMM" directory with POWERNODE.
That's all you need... just the "COMM" and the config file.
POWERNODE does the rest. Now from the DOS prompt enter.
BICONFIG
A screen will pop up for you to configure Bimodem with. Here
are some of the important settings.
Receiving Directory
put where you want your files to be downloaded to.. like
C:\com\loads.
Sending Directory
leave this one blank as POWERNODE will handle it.
Next LEAVE the BIMODEM.PTH file named BIMODEM.PTH and under
the LOG file put the name of the file you want the Bimodem
logs written to, or just leave it alone and it will place a
BIMODEM.LOG file in the "COMM" directory. Next on Logging, the F
or full option puts all the filenames and transfer stats into
a log file. The S or Summary puts Bimodem start and stop times
into the log. The rest of the parameters you can just hit
return and default through. Under the download and upload
areas you might wanna turn on the Verify option by entering
Y. This will quick verify every file that you send or receive
for accuracy. It is FAST..! When you exit a file will have
been created called BIMODEM.CFG which contains these defaults.
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 23
Entering BICONFIG will allow you to re-edit the config file.
And deleting it will bring back the default configuration when
you type BICONFIG. NOTE.. if you are running fast iron and
9600 baud set to Half duplex instead of Full duplex. BIMODEM
will automatically drop to full duplex at slower speeds.
THAT's IT.!!
I do all the rest for you from POWERNODE.. including building
the upload download sets, which are called PTH or path files.
Make sure you are sitting down first time you do a bimodem
transfer, it's amazing..!
╔═══════════════════════════════╗
║ About POWERNODE Revision E.. ║
╚═══════════════════════════════╝
The major enhancement to E is the addition of the DSZ shell
support. The advantage that everyone always claims for Telix
is the great automatic ZModem downloads.. The minute you ask
for a file from the host Telix starts downloading with no user
intervention. This is one feature that Telix has always had
above other "COMM" programs and IT IS NO MORE ! Now you have the
same feature with Qmodem, Procomm, GT, Pibterm, Boyan, etc.
POWERNODE supplies a door to the DSZ shell. When you enter the
door from POWERNODE by typing "S" (for Shell) at the Main Menu
you will still be logged onto the BBS and in the terminal
screen. The screen will clear and a DSZ logo will appear at
the top, and a POWERNODE help logo at the bottom. Hit the
return key and the BBS prompt will appear, just like you never
left the "COMM" program. Using Zippy "dir" scan or MATCH or N
newfiles, find the files you wanna download and start the
download with the host system... Surprise.. the minute you
request the download the file transfer starts..just like Telix
only a couple CPS faster because Forsberg is on this end. At
any time just hit the F1 key and you will be right back in
your "COMM" program with the screen just as you left it.. still
online. The DSZ shell integration is seamless, in fact during
beta testing many users claimed all they used the "COMM" program
for now was dialing and getting to POWERNODE uploads.. I don't
concur as I enjoy features like scrollback buffers, logs etc.
But you will find yourself forgetting you have left the "COMM"
program and are in a shell. After every file transfer the
shell prompts you with "F1 to exit" to remind you that you are
not currently in the "COMM" program. You can even log off in the
shell. DSZ will ignore the state of the carrrier detect so
will even shell offline. Another benefit to the DSZ shell is
that when you are shelled I place you in your download
directory, the one you specified in your PNODE.CFG file. I
call DSZ from the directory POWERNODE is in by using
POWERNODE'S path. What this means is that your downloads will
not be effected by the crippled DSZ. They will be placed
EXACTLY where your POWERNODE download specifies, just as you
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 24
want them. When the shell is done I return you to your
original "COMM" directory and shove you back into your "COMM"
program with a kiss...
Revision E adds support for 1-k Xmodem G protocols. This is a
registered option and you must register your DSZ for this
operation to function. If you try it without registering, DSZ
will bitch at you and abort, I will give you a clean abort and
send you back into your "COMM" program. This protocol was added
to support high speed mail runs via POWERNODE. You aliens at
Sleepy Hollow and Minx will know who I am talking about..

╚═══════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Now.. I have given you the capability of uploading 270 files
from 10 different drives into one ZModem upload. I have given
you the ability to use the SAME upload set for ZModem,
SuperK8, SuperK8G MNP and Lynx protocols. I have given you
autoZModem downloads that technically defeat the crippled DSZ
releases and technically ourperform the internal autoZModem in
Telix. Now you have it in Procomm, GT Powercom, COMMO, Boyan
and all other term programs, not just Telix anymore. I have
given you foolproof Jmodem integration into your "COMM" program
including Johnson's latest Jmodem release. I have given you
the Bytebrother' "drunkman" download system that has been
hailed by brain damaged and chemically impared file transfer
phreaks from coast to coast ! I have given you a transfer
arsenal that includes ZModem, Jmodem, Jmodem-Batch, Ymodem-B,
Ymodem-G, Xmodem-1k, Xmodem-1kG, Bimodem, SuperK8, SuperK8G
Puma and Lynx, the most powerful set of transfer tools ever
assembled for power users. I have given you audio alarms for
your transfer completions using three different volume
settings, from gnat fart to hurricane. I have given you fast
popup windows and fancy color screens for your external
transfers and I have given you a fast online color coded
directory lister. Do we even need mention the most powerful
BIMODEM support system around, and this is not all.. I'm just
running out of hot air... how about sending me ten bucks or
two fifths of vodka.. this is all I will whine about money.
POWERNODE will never be crippled in any way. All I ask is a
fair shake and a stiff drink..burp.! or a propane torch, a
pile of aged DSZ docs, and an Electrolux vacuum cleaner with a
gas mask on the exhaust hose..! If this program ain't worth

║ POWERNODE.. the reason.. ║
╚═══════════════════════════╝
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 25
Let's face it file transfers can be a hassle..especially
uploads. To get the best performance, newest protocols, and
latest revisions it is necessary to run shells. How many "COMM"
programs have Jmodem internal or Bimodem SuperK and Lynx ? And
how many revisions behind DSZ are the embedded ZModem
protocols in some terminal programs that support ZModem.
POWERNODE is designed to make it easier to use external
protocols in almost any Communications program. If your "COMM"
program can run an external program like an editor or Vern
Buerg's LIST (tm), and you have enough memory to run ZModem
you will want this program. The program will also run stand
alone to create ZModem batch transfer files or complete
Bimodem upload/download set with a menu driven directory
display. Here are some of the features of POWERNODE.
POWERNODE runs Chuck Forsberg's DSZ ZModem (tm), R.D.Johnson's
Jmodem, Erik's amazing BIMODEM (tm) protocol, Crater Rim's
Super8k Super8kG (tm) and Matt Thomas's Lynx and Puma from
your current Communications program. It runs all protocols
directly without the need for batch files. Supports full param
passing and the crippled DSZ versions from 12/88 on. POWERNODE
also runs Xmodem 1-k (sometimes improperly called Ymodem) and
Xmodem 1-k G as well as Ymodem-G to registered DSZ users.
POWERNODE provides fast pop-up menu driven directory screens
to allow you to simply tag files for uploading. No more having
to "dir" and check a filename or grabbing for the diskover and
having to type in the name and path. If you lose a file you
can even pop up the window and travel thru your disk, ( tag
the directory names or .. to change directories ) find the
bugger and tag him. If you need a color coded directory lister
one is provided from the Main Menu at the 'F' option.
After starting your transfer with the host, activate
POWERNODE, select your protocol or just press the carriage
return to use the last protcol you used. Then select the
directory, if you hit return the last directory you uploaded
from will be used. When the file window pops up simply tag the
file..the file and pathname are transmitted to the protocol
and transfer begins...no typos or retyping ever..
POWERNODE supports the powerful indirect batch transfer mode
of ZModem SuperK8 and Lynx/Puma. Here's the scenario..either
offline before you log on or online ( it's quick ), pop into
the file display and move around on any drive(s) tagging
files. This is the Create 'C' option from the Main Menu and is
used to build batch transfer upload sets. The filenames and
full path of the files you tag are transferred into a text
file. When done with the list start a batch upload to the
host. Hit POWERNODE and one of the six protocol options on the
bottom of the Main Menu, and transfer all the tagged files to
the host via batch transfer automatically.
No more having to copy all the files to one "dir" so you can
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 26
wildcard copy, and on corporate or private systems you can
transfer as many files as you care to tag. No command line
limitations involved. This feature is a ProDoor/Zdoor (tm)
user's dream come true. Take a minute to tag a dozen files,
start a batch upload from ProDoor hit the Z-key and leave.
When you are beeped come back in and enter the file
descriptions as ProDoor checks the zips. And now that Auntie
is spreading and supports batch uploads, POWERNODE can give
the good ole gal a hand also, not to mention since Wes Meier
has added Jmodem to Auntie POWERNODE becomes a perfect
"Auntie" turbo-charger for your "COMM" program.
For ZModem downloads POWERNODE is faster than any batch shell
and even faster than Telix internal autodown if you use the
DSZ shell option ('S'). Hit the hotkey for POWERNODE and
immediately hit 'd' and 'z' before the screen is even popped
up..you will be routed straight into DSZ ZModem download for
single/batch downloads. Better yet enter 'S' from the main
menu and enter the DSZ shell. You will still be logged into
the BBS, just ask for the download and the ZModem download
will start automatically, hit F1 at any time to pop back up
into your "COMM" program.
Jmodem and 1k Xmodem unfortunately do not pass filenames so
even though I can give you a filename to tag for uploads
(making it easier than typing it in) you still have to enter a
filename for downloads...well not really. For you rrreeeaaalll
lazy geeks just hit enter when prompted for a download
filename and it will download the file giving it the current
time as filename with the extension .JMD for Jmodem download
or .XMD for xmodem (xmodem 1-k) download. This is the
Bytebrother's own "Drunkman" download system and has been a
real boon to both chemically incapable and brain damaged BBS
phreaks. Of course it's totally your problem what the hell is
in file 110235PM.JMD, that's the price you pay for being so
lazy...unzip it and see, or run your logger during transfers
and sort it out when you are sober.. For those of you not
quite so lazy if you just type in the filename with no
extension the download window will add .ZIP to the filename.
After running many "COMM"programs testing POWERNODE I was
disappointed at some of the poor file "dir" procedures used.
Some even required you to log onto a drive just to look at the
file directory. For this reason from the Main Menu option F
will prompt for a pathname and do a color coded directory
list. Files with extensions .EXE, .COM, ARC., PAK., MAC.,
GIF., BAT. are all coded different colors to allow you to spot
them more easily. And files with extensions ZIP,ARC,GIF,PAK,LZH
and QWK and REP are shown in high intensity. Upon leaving the
file list you will be shot right back up into the Main Menu.
Hit ESCape to go back into your "COMM" program, or play POWERNODE
some more.
To get rid of the bleak scenery during external transfers,
color has been added to the external protocol windows. This is

a solely aesthetic concession and is dedicated to Ladybird
Johnson ( no relation to Dick Johnson ). It also provides an
opportunity to give much deserved credit to the authors of the
transfer programs..after all they do all the hard work..
Besides, if your gonna do it, do it in style right ? Despite
the complaints of programmers about snazzy interfaces I still
would prefer traveling to Europe in a Lear Jet rather than an
F-4.
For all you Mouseketeers POWERNODE supports standard mouse
drivers on all the file screens. You can move and tag files
with the mouse and change directories by tagging directory
names. The right mouse button acts as the ESCape key and will
exit for you. There's no truth to the rumour that POWERNODE
has been know to "explode" mice rather dramatically, that was
a different Bytebrother program..
The POWERNODE requires DSZ.COM (or DSZ.EXE), SUPERK.COM and
SUPERK.000, BIMODEM.COM and BICONFIG.COM and the PUMA protocol
along with POWERNODE for a full system.
The JMODEM and LYNX protocols are included in the POWERNODE
archive, although you will wanna replace the earlier
freeware LYNX in POWERNODE with a later Shareware version.
Chuck Forsberg's DSZ is not FREEware and if you decide to use
it you should register your copies, also true of Erickson's
BIMODEM and Crater Rim's SUPERK. Dick Johnson's Jmodem is
included with the approval of the author, it is supplied as
RELEASED TO PUBLIC DOMAIN..meaning There's NO registration,
it is a gift from the author to all of us gratis, and the
complete source is available.. refreshing huh ? Pay him back
by calling the PROGRAM EXCHANGE in Boulder Co. and check it
out.! He lays some pretty mean Vax code. Also Matt Thomas's
LYNX is also released public domain and included in the
POWERNODE archive. However the newer versions after Revision
3.00 are Shareware and you can find them on your local BBS
system. LYNX302.ZIP being the latest as of this writing. The
authors are given credit in the external display pages of
their protocols. When a new revision of ZModem (bout once a
month ) or Jmodem ( every two months ) or Bimodem or SuperK
(bout once every six weeks ) comes out just plug in new .COM
files and play state of the art.
program philosophy..
My idea is that a transfer shell should easily transfer
program information to external protocols as efficiently as
possible. It should have as top criteria the ability to route
files together from a complex disk system with multiple
directories and drives with as few keystrokes as possible. It
should not limit the user in either file quantities or ease of
access to ANY sector of the file system. It should not force
the user to move files to a central area for transfer.
POWERNODE fulfills these criteria and that's why I wrote it

No matter what version of DSZ you are using via POWERNODE it
will place all your downloaded files into the correct download
directory exactly where you specified in line 2 of your file
PNODE.CFG. POWERNODE will change line 3 of the PNODE.CFG file
as you use it and will keep it at your last upload directory.
The default ZModem setting is full handshaking and a 4k
buffer. Error recovery enabled on downloads. If you wanna
run DSZ.EXE instead of the .COM version set line four to
DSZ.EXE, note that you should not use DSZ.EXE unless you are
running a slow machine (4.77 mhz) at 9600 baud or above. It
does not support file sharing or buffers, and if you do run it
you will need to delete the pB4096 command from your DSZ
strings in the PNODE.CFG file.
If you need to add special parameters to ZModem just stick
them into lines five and six as you want them passed to DSZ.
Line seven is a file mask in normal DOS format. If you always
wanna look at ALL files when POWERNODE does a pickfile
directory just leave it alone, if you only upload .ZIP files
you can change it to *.ZIP and it will not clutter up your
directory display with other filenames. Note that if you
change it to *.ZIP you will not be able to see or tag .GIF or
other extension files.
If you ever "foul up" your config file just delete it and
POWERNODE will make you a new one. Use this as a
troubleshooting step if things start going strange on you.
Line nine is the setting of ZModem, SuperK and Lynx recovery.
Line ten is the speed control for the SuperK and Lynx
protocols and line eleven is the current default transfer
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 29
protocol. Line twelve is the current SuperK8 mode, batch or
single file, and lines thirteen and fourteen are the command
lines that are passed to the Lynx transfer protocol. Lines 15
and 16 are the parameters passed to Puma protocol, and line 17
is the state of MobyTurbo: ON or OFF.
Note that there's a problem with Lynx initializing certain
modems with speed. There are some UART's including those in
some laptops that Lynx will read at 3 baud on a 2400 port,
giving you 120 minute estimate times for 12k transfers, and
bringing new meaning to the expression "constipation".
POWERNODE forces the port speed for Lynx rather than letting
it read the UART to prevent this problem. Nec Multispeeds will
usually have this problem and other machines using NEC UART's.
POWERNODE will change your transfer defaults to the ones you
use during operation..it may beep at you the first time it
runs because it checks to see if paths exist..but it will
change them as you use the program, and always leave them set
exactly where you left off ( which come to think of it is more
than I can say for DOS..I always boot into C:\ no matter where
I was when I parked the drive). With no or bad info POWERNODE
always defaults to com port 1, the directory you started it
from, and running DSZ.COM.
When using POWERNODE with floppies put a label on each of your
download floppies using the label command.
ie..
LABEL a:down
The reason is on floppy systems rather than create a small
file and erase it to check for a valid drive, POWERNODE first
checks for the existance of a file ( or label ) on the disk.
This speeds up floppy based transfers, which can be slow enough
without writing and erasing dummy files.
Summary..
POWERNODE was designed to be as user friendly and bullet proof
as possible. It will check all paths/drives you give it and
if bad will default to the home dir. If you specified a
floppy last upload time and leave a disk out when you reboot,
POWERNODE will beep at you to let you know it is changing your
default back to home.
Selection choices are one at a time and single key entry. You
can start entering commands to POWERNODE before the windows
even pop up and be on your way transferring. You can run it
outside your terminal program by simply entering POWERN at the
DOS prompt. You can use this to create your automated
ZModem/SuperK batch files, or your whole Bimodem
upload/download sessions while offline, or just to get used to
the program. Both DSZ and Jmodem are smart enough to detect
no carrier and both respond to control-break ( although Jmodem
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 30
may take a while to abort ) so play with it in this mode to
get familiar. The ESCape key will exit you from any menu back
to the "COMM" program and control-break is recognized both by
POWERNODE and also by the protocols as a valid abort entry.
POWERNODE has been tested on well over a thousand PC's and
compatibles including a bevy of Taiwan Turbos and so far no
one has been killed ! I will not be held responsible for any
damage caused by this software but I have no worries about its
use as it has been tested extensively. If you enjoy/use this
program please send $10.00 to..

REVISION HISTORY:
Revision 2.0 First beta testing. Changed colors to provide
better visibility for cheap geeks using composite monitors.
Enhanced the Create option by putting file list window on
screen.
Revision 3.0 Changed pathname window to display full current
default upload path. Added extra screen clears to accomodate
cleaner screens on Zenith turkey displays..
Revision 4.0 Added default date filename to Jmodem downloads
at the request of Bytebrother testers who were ususally too
lazy or too drunk or both to enter filenames.
Revision 5.0 Finally caved in and added xmodem 1-k support for
testers who became addicted to POWERNODE and wanted to work
Podunk boards that supported neither Z or J.
Revision 6.0 Added support for customizable ZModem parameters
to be passed to DSZ.
Revision 7.0 Fixed a com port 2 bug from a bad support file.
Added latest revision docs from Jmodem release. Did a speedup
on the check valid defaults in start routine.
Revision 8.0 Added the latest Jmodem executable and docs off
the authors board in Colorado Springs. Added Jmodem batch
downloads as Wildcat boards across the country have begun
support of batch downloads. Modified screen colors to support
some AT&T displays and fixed a bug causing window breaking on
some display adapters.
Revision 9.0 Deleted DSZ files from the release but kept the
jmodem docs and executable. Slight revisions to code after
extensive testing with many "COMM" programs, but no bugs to fix
simply some speed ups and sequence changes.
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 31
Revision A.0 Added the capability to directly execute ZModem
batch transfers from the Create module at the request of
numerous users.
Revision B.0 Due to a suggestion from the author of Hotkey-Z
(of all people) via email left on a Phoenix net and on Info
Booth in Wichita, I have modified the directory listing in the
Create mode to leave tagged files tagged and to save the
cursor position after each file tagging. Always glad to keep
the competition happy..
Revision C.0 Made minor mods to directory display and changed
pnode.cfg file to support the new crippled DSZ and maintain
compatibility with DSZ "classic".
Revision D.0 At the request of Eric Cockrell, author of
EZReader ( the best Qmail reader on the planet ) added support
for all four com ports. Also added the Files display option to
the Main Menu.. Here ya go Eric..!!
Revision E.0 Put a lot of work in. Added DSZ shell, redid all
the screens and displays, enhanced some of the logic for
speed, added enhanced sound effects, started support for the
environment variable JMLOG to point to jmodem logs. Added
enhancements to JMODEM BATCH transfer area. Added support of
Xmodem 1-k G protocol. The first really major upgrade of
POWERNODE since it's initial release.
Revision F.0 Added a complete BIMODEM system to POWERNODE.
Added shutup to sound. Support of ZIP files. Toggle for DSZ
error recovery, and a major Bimodem enhancement to support
the BIMODEM protocol. Also added argument passing to POWERN so
it can be called from batch files or term programs that
support param passing to shelled programs.
Revision G.0 Added two new protocols, Super8k and Lynx. Redid
much of the bimodem support package to optimize for speed and
flexiblity. Integrated selectable error recovery into the two
new protocols and changed the [F]ile display from the main
menu to return to POWERNODE rather than the "COMM" program. Redid
most all of the screens and added help text to the Main Menu.
Added support for the Ymodem-G protocol and added Bimodem
transfer option from within the Bimodem BBBI.EXE module. Added
extra volume controls to the scream modules and extensive new
documentation. Added default protocol window and saved setting
and added code to completely uncripple DSZ in the file
transfer window as well as the DSZ shell. Initial release only
to registered users.
Revision H.0 added support for all single file modes of SuperK
including the MNP version. Added support of SuperKG MNP batch
transfers and Lynx batch transfers using the same filesets
used by ZModem and SuperK8. Added ability to run POWERNODE and
the transfer protocols out of any specified path using an
environment variable. Fixed bug in Lynx UART reads while
POWERN.DOC Monday, February 12, 1990 12:28 am Page 32
author of Lynx fixed incompatibilities with Qmodem 4.0. Added
support docs for COMMO (since everyone in No. Calif. got me to
running COMMO and NODE). Added new batch upload commands to
batch repetoire, screen modifications, code cleanups and
streamlining so that all these changes were done with less
than 4k increase in code size and 15 percent speed
improvement.
Revision I.0 added support for Puma, full support up/down
batch including filesets. Added support to sort file
directories with Norton's File Sort, and added file management
shell from the Main Menu with Gordon Haff's Directory Freedom.
Added batch upload capability using Ymodem-G and the filesets.
Changed all the screens and added upload path to transfer
protocol screen. Added toggle switch and display of MobyTurbo
when turned ON or OFF using DSZ-90. Optimized all default
parameters for 14.4k modems and 38k ports.
